Richard "Rick" Straszewski

Richard "Rick" Straszewski lost a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013. Rick was born to his parents Theodore and Irene (Nadwodny) Straszewski in 1952 and was a lifelong resident of Manville. He was a 1970 graduate of Manville High School. Rick joined the Somerset County Sheriff's Dept. in 1974 as a Corrections Officer. He was later made a Sheriff's Officer and graduated from the Union County Police Academy. Rick also attended several courses on Fingerprint Identification and Crime Scene Investigation and was recognized in New Jersey Superior Court as an expert in fingerprint identification. In 1980, Rick joined the Manville Police Dept. as a patrolman. While with the Manville P.D. he was twice awarded commendations for his service in the field. Most recently Rick was employed as New Jersey Transportation Supervisor for DiCarlo Foodservice out of Holtsville, NY. In 1999 Rick joined the Manville First Aid & Rescue Squad as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician. He became certified in various techniques including Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, Swift Water Rescue and Motor Vehicle Extrication. After the terrorist attack on 9/11 the Manville Rescue Squad, being a member of the N.J. First Aid Council was called in to assist the various rescue workers and first responders. Rick was among the first crew to volunteer and respond. Rick worked his way up the ranks in the rescue squad eventually spending two years as its Chief. He was also a life member of the Manville Rescue Squad. Rick is also a member and Trustee of the Veterans of Manville at Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW
#2290. His hobbies include playing his guitar and shooting pool in the "Amateur Poolplayers Assoc."
Rick is survived by his cherished and loving daughter, Jamie Hosgood and her husband Christopher. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry Straszewski of Manville and Gary Straszewski and wife Ann of Manville; brother, Ted Scott of Toronto, Canada; sisters, Rosemary Zakszewski of Flemington and Barbara Bartushak and husband Andrew of Manville. Rick also leaves behind several loving nieces and nephews including his most recent great-nephew, Thomas Jacob Straszewski. Rick also leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and long-time girlfriend, Lori Jones and her daughters, Melissa and Jessica with whom he shared several years of mutual support and caring.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835 on Sunday, November 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Monday, November 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin on Monday, November 4 at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a 12:30 p.m. funeral liturgy at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Manville. Committal words will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park Chapel in Basking Ridge.
