Sylvester (Syl) Carroll, 91, died on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center after a 10 year struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He graduated from West Side High School and attended Seton Hall College. He was proud of his service as a Marine Sergeant deployed to the South Pacific during World War II. He was employed in various management positions throughout the Bell System and retired from the legal department of AT&T after 43 years of service. During those years, he volunteered in Spring Lake as a special police officer, as a member of fire company #1 and the planning board and as the code enforcement officer for six years after his retirement. He loved his family, played tennis, and enjoyed extensive travel throughout the world.

He was predeceased by his parents, Sylvester and Gertrude Carroll and brother, Edward. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Margaret Gloria; a son, James Patrick, of Ocean Township; a daughter, Mary Jean, of Spring Lake; 3 granddaughters, Debra and Holly, of Hunterdon County, and Shannon and Michael Guerrera and a great-granddaughter, Julianna, of North Carolina.

Visitation will be on Monday, November 26 from 8:30 to 10 AM at the O'Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35, Wall Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall.
