Vernon Hankins, 61, of Brick, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Born and raised in Point Pleasant Beach, he has lived in Brick for 28 years. He was an Art Teacher at Brick Township High School for 33 years, and was also the Head of the Fine Arts Department. He enjoyed music and art, and began playing in bands when he was 13 years old. Mr. Hankins loved coaching and had been a coach of girls field hockey, girls softball, girls basketball, and boys basketball, both in Point Pleasant Beach and Brick. He loved riding his bike to Bay Head, carpentry, working on his house, his two dogs Lady and Penny, and his friends. Above all else he loved his family, including his granddaughter.
Vernon was predeceased by his mother and father, Donald and Cora (Burdge) Hankins. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, April; daughter Alyssa Hankins,sons, David Hankins, Donald and Safine Hankins, and grand-daughter Nahla Hankins, his brother Mark Hankins; his sisters Debbie Hankins, Donna Hankins and her partner Jeanne Jaramosia.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Monday, November 26, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking Road in Brick. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Visitation in Brick. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to his family to help defray the costs of rebuilding the house that Vernon built and died fixing.
