William Gary Fendelander, 73, of Middletown, died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at the Specialty Hospital at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a long and courageous battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and received a lung transplant on July 4, 2012. He was born in Paterson and moved with his family to the shore area when he was young, growing up in Long Branch and Monmouth Beach. He lived in Rumson and Oceanport before recently moving to Middletown. Gary, as he was known to all, attended Red Bank Catholic High School and was a graduate of Monmouth University with a degree in accounting. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and was a navigator on the mach 2 Vigilante RA-5C, one of the largest and heaviest reconnaissance aircraft ever accepted for service aboard US Navy carriers. He flew off the carrier Independence. He left the service with the rank of Lieutenant and went on to train as a commercial airline pilot. He flew for Eastern Airlines for over 20 years, a career he loved.

Gary is survived by his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Holmes Fendelander, his wife of 48 years; two daughters, Lahn of Arlington, MA; Kristin Kelly and her husband Kevin of Middletown; two beloved grandchildren, Layne and Gracie; his brother, Dennis and wife Som of Thousand Oaks, CA; sister, Patricia Fonselius and husband Jan of Long Branch; brother, Keith of FL; maternal aunt, Rosemarie Strong of Long Branch; and many cherished nieces and nephews who all loved their Uncle Gary. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilbert and Marie Fendelander and his sister, Sue Ann Conover.

Gary was an avid runner in his younger years, and enjoyed walking, boating, traveling, and mostly spending time with his family whom he loved so much. He was a loyal friend, had a marvelous sense of humor and was always looking for an adventure. He will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known and loved him.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26th, 6-9 PM at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad Street, Red Bank. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 27th, 10:00 AM at Church of the Precious Blood, 72 Riverdale Ave., Monmouth Beach. Memorial donations may be made in Gary's name to Coalition For Pulmonary Fibrosis, 10866 W. Washington Blvd. #343, Culver City, CA 90232.
