Marion Flaherty Obituary

Marion Flaherty

AGE: 84 • formerly of Red Bank

Marian Flaherty, 84, most recently of Shrewsbury, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 30th. She was born May 31, 1932 in Jersey City, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Foley. Marian graduated from St. Aloysius Academy and studied at Fordham University. She earned a degree from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. Marian was married to the love of her life, Frank, and as she liked to say, "I chased him until he caught me". She was a long time communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, in Red Bank, and in recent years was active at Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church in Neptune. At a young age, Marian would visit Foundling Hospitals just to hold and comfort babies who had no parents. Perhaps that's where her interest in children began because she went on to have 10 children with her Frank. While raising her family, she stepped outside to help others. Her passion for the pro-life cause energized her to co-found Birthright of Red Bank in 1978, a non-denominational program that provides support to those facing an unexpected or crisis pregnancy. Her commitment to Birthright continued for the next 30 plus years, and for her efforts she received a number of awards recognizing her devotion to the pro-life cause. But she did so much more. She would get up before dawn to pick up day- old bread from local supermarkets to deliver to the Barn for the Poorest of the Poor. She sought out nursing home residents who had no other visitors; brought communion and comfort to hospital and nursing home patients, and found safe homes for expectant moms. The Church was central to Marian's life and these are a few examples of how she lived her Christian faith.

Marian enjoyed spending a day at the beach, a social game of bridge and the challenge of the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle. She enjoyed Irish music and singing show tunes, especially when accompanied by her sister and best friend Eileen on the piano.

Once their children were grown, Marian and Frank travelled extensively, often to visit their Irish relatives. Grandchildren brought new opportunities for more adventure. After her husband died, Marian continued to support her family and welcomed great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her quick wit, hearty laughs, love of family and her deep faith.

In addition to her parents, Marian is predeceased by her sister Eileen Faherty, and Francis X. Flaherty, her husband of nearly 52 years. She is survived by her 10 children and their spouses: daughters Ann McSween (David) of Alexandria VA; Mary Beth Bauerle (James) of Chalfont PA; Virginia Rodriguez (David) of Alexandria VA; Patricia Farrell (John) of Yardley PA; Kathleen Marhan (Paul) of Glen Ridge NJ; Eileen Donahue (Mark) of Shrewsbury NJ; and Deirdre Costanza (Joseph) of Red Bank NJ; and sons: Francis X. Flaherty Jr. of Alexandria VA (Patricia Roos of Chester Springs PA); Harry Flaherty (Janine) of Little Silver NJ; and Kyle Flaherty (Susan) of Upper Montclair NJ. She is also survived by her 33 grandchildren: Allison, Katherine, Greg, Brian, Sarah, Erin, Gretchen, Amy, Melissa, David, Andrew, Frank, Brittany, Jim, Sean, Christine, Harry, Zach, Jake, Abigail, Jesse, Emily, Shannon, Meghan, Jeanne Marie, Annelise, Max, Madeline, Kyle, Keira, Emma, Peter and Olivia. Marian has also been blessed with 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3-5 pm on Saturday December 3rd and 3-7 pm on Sunday, December 4th at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday, December 5th at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, with internment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. In Marian's memory, donations may be made to Birthright of Red Bank, 294 Broad Street #1, Red Bank NJ 07701.

It is with a sad heart that we leave this message. It was a privilege to have known Marion, she was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Marion always made her extended family in Ireland feel such at home when in America and it was always so great when Marion would visit us here in Ireland. We will always treasure the special memories we have. She is reunited now with her Frank. Ours thoughts and prayers are with all the family during this difficult time.

Dear Ann, Mary Beth,
And all the Flahertys of my Hurley past.
It feels good to remember your family and those times, who your mom was to all of the neighborhood kids.
Here we learn of the many other folks that she took under her wing as well.
I'm sorry for your loss of your mom's embrace and conversation.
I'm sorry for our loss of a beloved matriarch.
Take good care, all of you!
Love
April

To all my backyard friends - Your mom was one of the most generous people I've ever known. And cheerful! Her laugh made me smile from the inside. One of my fondest memories is when she reached out to me one summer when I was home from college, to offer me the use of the family piano because she knew we no longer had one. She let me know when no one would be home (no small feat!) so I could pound those keys to my hearts content. Her thoughtfulness touched my soul. My love to you all as you gather to celebrate her. I wish I could be there with you.

We're very sorry to hear that Aunt Marion has passed. She was a wonderful lady who I'll always remember for being kind and cheerful whenever we saw her. She'll be missed so much, but at least there's the comfort of knowing that she's together with Uncle Frank again.

Marion was in my Renew prayer group which I led at the St. James convent 17 years ago. The greatest memory I have of her is that she prayed fervently for her children. A woman of deep faith, a loving wife, and most of all, a devoted mother.
To Frank, Harry, all the Flahertys, may the Lord bless and keep her.

Your mom and I had a really nice conversation the last time we met. I very much appreciated her vitality and her kind demeanor, and recognized at the time her example of how to not only live life to the fullest, but how to always give more to this world than you take. I'm so glad you could enjoy her company here for all this time.

When we first moved to Fairview nearly forty years ago, my dad's first impression on the first day moving in was that we were fortunate to have a wonderful family across the street as our new neighbors. Mr. Flaherty had come right over to welcome him to the neighborhood and to offer his help on that hot August day. Coming from the city, dad was amazed at his generosity--and that he had met someone who actually had more children then he did right across the street! In the years to come they became good friends, often meeting up on their travels home from work in the city together. My brothers and I all got to know Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty and their family across the street and to learn what a truly wonderful and amazingly kind and generous family they are. I cannot help but smile when I think of any one of them. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

There aren't enough superlatives to express my respect and affection for this woman. She and Mr. Flaherty teamed to raise a wonderful family, and I will forever be in their debt for bringing up the best friend anyone could have in their son Harry. My thoughts and prayers to all of her children, children-in-law, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
