Paul Evans Kaylor, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at the age of 84, following a long period of deteriorating health. He was born in McCayesville, Georgia on April 2, 1930 and lived there until he entered college. He completed his B.A. degree at Mercer University in 1951. He earned the M.Div degree from Yale University Divinity School in 1954 and was ordained in that year as a priest of the Episcopal Church. He was pastor of First Church in LeRoy, NY from 1954 to 1958 and subsequently Senior Campus Minister for the Nassau Council of Churches in Garden City, NY. While in that position, he spent a year at Harvard University and Episcopal Divinity School under a Danforth Campus Ministry Fellowship. In 1967, he accepted the position of Chaplain of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Kaylor was a man of wide ranging intellectual and artistic interests. His deep commitment to social justice inspired students to involve themselves in issues of social injustice. In addition to his duties as Chaplain, he taught in the Department of Religion and served as chief planner for the 200th Anniversary Celebration of the College.
In 1977, he accepted appointment as Director of Institutional Resources at Simon's Rock Early College (now Simon's Rock of Bard College) in Great Barrington, MA where he served with distinction. In 1980, he became Vice President of Development at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico and then in 1984 Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Monmouth College (now Monmouth University). As Vice President, he was a senior advisor to the President of the College and was influential in the growth of the College's presence in the wider Monmouth County community. He led a successful capital fund-raising campaign, which helped increase the College's endowment from $1.5 million to approximately $11 million. He retired in 1993.
Following retirement, Kaylor was active in the life of Monmouth County until his death. He served enthusiastically both as a member of the Sandy Hook Foundation Board of Directors and as a Trustee of the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank.
Kaylor was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, all of whom remained in their native South.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2014 at the Stone Church in Highlands. Interment will be in the Stone Church cemetery.
