Paul Bowen Obituary

Paul J Bowen

AGE: 68 • Forked River

Paul J. Bowen, 68 of Lacey, formerly of Yonkers, NY., passed away on February 16, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and lifelong friends. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Yonkers, in 1963, and worked in banking in New York and New Jersey. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rosemary Schiumo; his daughter, Rachael; his son, Jon-Paul; his mother, Grace; his sister, Joanne Mancuso; his brother-in-law, Michael Schiumo and wife, Michele; his sister-in-law, Angela Mills and husband Lanny; and his beloved nieces and nephews.

Paul was known to tell the same jokes, with an unmatched wit, for 40 years, and they never went without a laugh. They'll live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who loved him. He was always there for his family, and nothing mattered more to him than them - from his daughter's soccer games and dance recitals, to his son's Little League games and bowling matches, to the every day laughs, hugs and kisses with the love of his life, Rosemary. He loved the Yankees, the Rangers and the Giants, and shared the love of sports with his son, as well as his entire family. He is remembered as a man whose loyalty to his friends and loved ones will never be duplicated.

Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Layton's Home For Funerals, Forked River, NJ 609-971-6800. A funeral mass will follow Thursday morning. Burial will be at Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106.

I remember Paul well. He was my manager at United Jersey Bank in Matawan when I worked there as a teller. He would often give his brand of "fatherly" advice in his own quirky way. I often think of those moments and his advice given while I hung around after hours as he finished up with a customer. My sincerest condolences.

Paul and the Bowen family have been close friends of ours for many, many years. I think of all the good times we shared with Paul: the annual gatherings at the Lacey July 4th Fireworks and the New Years Eve Party, sharing apps and drinks at the Tiki Bar, relaxing on the Island State Park beach, or just late nights around the Bowen dining room table. I will miss the long conversations about sports, politics, or just about anything. Paul was a great host, always attending to everyone's needs, and got me hooked on ice cold Coors Light in a frosty mug. Paul was such a good husband, father and friend, and will truly be missed by all. God speed my good friend!

Our deepest condolences, from Rick, Lorraine and all the Thompson Family.

To my best friend Ro and her wonderful children JP and Rach. There are no words I can write to you all for it would take up the whole guest book. Paul has always been such a wonderful friend to my husband Marty. Mart always found Paul more than a best friend he felt Paul was like a brother to him he never had and I thanked God everyday for that bond they both shared. My family and I were very blessed from the first day we met you. I thank god everyday for the love and friendship and beautiful memories we all shared over the years. You will be missed more than words can say and I know now in my heart you will be another "Guardian Angel" watching over your beautiful family and friends. Miss you everyday sending you big hugs from us all. Paul will be great missed by me and my family. Love you forever more Mr. Bowen, always Karen.xoxo

Paul was as a great friend and I'll never forget the many good times we shared. It was a true treat to see him dispense his unique form of wit and hear him passionately express his views on the world around him, especially so if you disagreed with him. Rosemary, Jon-Paul and Rachel were fortunate to have had him in their life, and so was I.

Rose, JP, Rachel:
Your dad was an inspiration, an incredibly wise man who always had the biggest personality in the room. He set an impressively high bar; as a man, as a father, as a friend, that I will strive my whole life to try and reach. The world is full of people, but there was and forever will be only one Paul Bowen, and while our lives are a little dimmer without his shining presence around us every day, I know his influence will continue to be felt, and his laugh will continue to be heard in our lives forever. The memories of our wonderful times together are the best gifts that anyone could give, and I'm thankful I knew him. I'll miss him.

My condolences to Rosemary,Jon-Paul, Rachael, and all of the Bowen family. I always looked forward to those occasions, when we would see each other. Paul was one of those special people who could effortlessly resume a relationship despite long intervals of time. He is well remembered as a good friend, and more importantly,a devoted father and husband.

Rose, JP & Rach,
This guestbook could never contain the infinite laughs and memories that have been made over the past two decades. Paul was an amazing father, husband and man overall. He was an influential father figure throughout my life and taught me many valuable lessons that I will not soon forget. Unfortunately, I don't think I was ever truly able to "turn 5" in his eyes over the past 21 years. My deepest condolences to the entire family. Paul will truly be missed, but I promise every beer we crack will be in his memory for an eternity. R.I.P. my good friend, until we meet again.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Rosemary, Jon-Paul & Rachael,
There are no words to express our heartbreak at losing Paul. He was such an amazing family man with a great sense of humor, and so many unique "Paulisms" that will keep us laughing for years to come. So many wonderful memories... He is forever in our hearts, and we are always here for you. We can just imagine him and Grandpa Tony watching the Yankee games together and guarding you from above. God Bless. Love, Michele, Uncle Up, Pete McGlewk & Matthoo

On Lake Avenue in Yonkers there was a bunch of us: Paul Bowen, Jimmy Neville (RIP), Joe Nevin, Bobby Howard, Jackie MacDonald, Bobby (Herb) Shaub (RIP), Richie McSpedon, Willie Morrison, to name only a few. We had more laughs and drank more beer than you would think possible. I moved away. We lost touch but renewed our friendship around the reunion. I talked to Paul on the phone a few times—close to an hour each time and we caught up a bit by email. Then I couldn't make the reunion—so we never met up again. My loss. Paul was a great guy. In so many ways. “His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world: This was a man.”

RIP, Paul, sorry we missed last call.

Roe,Jon Paul, Rachel, and the Bowen family, I cannot tell you how shocked I was when I learned of Paul's passing tonight. Paul was blessed with the gift of irish wit and his stories would have us all roaring at many a bank meeting. It was an honor to work with Paul and know him as a friend for 30 years. I never met a man who truly doted on his family as did Paul. Now when the skies above us rumble, we will smile and know that Paul is entertaining all of heaven with yet another story & God is trying to restore order as Paul offers him a few suggestions or ideas! God bless dear friend as you will be truly missed and may those left behind take some solace in knowing our thoughts and prayers are with them.
My deepest sympathy, Peg Bennett-Wise
