Arthur Stone Obituary

Arthur "Skip" Leo Stone

AGE: 58 • Browns Mills

Arthur "Skip" Leo Stone, 58, of Browns Mills, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012. Born in Neptune, he later moved to Cranford where he spent most of his adult life. He served in the United States Army, Second Division from 1973 to 1979, and was stationed in Korea. For the past 13 years, he worked as a Line Clearance Engineer for Nelson Tree Service, Inc., and was a member of IBEW Local 94. Art was a talented musician, artist and craftsman. He was best known, however, as a living historian. He spent countless hours learning and living the history of the Civil War. He felt most at home on the Gettysburg National Park battlefield, and was universally respected and admired for his devotion to the art and science of reenacting. He touched many lives, and will be missed by all of those who were lucky to know him.

Art is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Denise Stone; his daughters, April Stone and her partner Luke Biancanello, of New Derry, New Hampshire, Melissa Mueller and her partner, Jamie Conner, of Keansburg, and Jennifer Boyle and her husband Luke, of Atlantic Highlands; three grandchildren, Joseph Zeidlik of China, Maine, Shayne Stone of New Derry, New Hampshire, and Christian Mueller of Keansburg; his sisters and brothers, Bonnie Stone, Mary Stone, William Stone, Michael Stone, and Rolando Gonzalez; nieces, nephews, many cousins; and his loyal friends and Pards.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, with funeral services at 4 p.m. at Posten's Funeral Home, 59 E. Lincoln Ave., Atlantic Highlands. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Assoc., P.O. Box 442, Wood-Ridge, NJ 07075 or through Paypal at [email protected].

Art I think about you often. You were a memorable person who made re-enacting special. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting our unit and making our events more special with your impersonations. We loved your playing of guitar and you made our day singing "whiskey in the rye" under that big old tree. You got everyone singing....you were truly one of a kind. You can measure a person by how much they are loved by others and you my friend are famous. You will never be forgotten. Until we meet again, Antoinette and Paul David

I am shocked to hear that Art has left us so suddenly. Our brief chats via the internet were a nice way to resume our old friendship from art school. I had expected I would see him again, but that was not to be. My deepest sympathy goes to his family. I hope the love of family and friends keep you uplifted.

Skip,
You never boasted about your talents – but my God you had so many of them. I remembered in commercial art school that Mr. Flynn wanted to get you into Cooper Union in NY and you said “nah, too regimented”. Besides your fantastic art work, you played the banjo and the guitar, did wonderful woodwork, landscaping, and even sew! You were also the only person I knew that had “different” pets. Most of us would have either cats or dogs, but not you. I remember Peppy the skunk, the great horned owl (forgot his name), a couple of raccoons, and a boa constrictor snake with a pet mouse as his best friend. You were one of a kind – I am truly honored to have known you, rest in peace Skip.

Art, You made everyone in your Civil War family feel special, especially when we were able to spend some quality time with you. Watching you interact with other reenactors and especially with the public made me feel proud to be a part of this amazing group of people. My heart goes out to your family and friends, knowing how much you will be missed.

There's a gap in the line that will never be filled. Everyone in reenacting who knew him admired his superb artistry. Art did more than just create uniforms and accouterments, he came closer than anyone I've seen to adopting the posture and body-language of the era. Art was like a great actor creating his favorite role. So very sorry for his family. God Keep you all.

Great man, a hearty laugh, great insight and a touch of wisdom were sure to accompany Art to any event. He was a voice of calm and sanity in every instance and will be sorely missed. God bless him and his family in this hour of loss.
God help anyone who has to fill the gap left in our lines by his absence.

Hey Art I'm really going to miss sitting around the campfire with you playing on the quitar and the rest of us trying to sing along. I so admired your talent for music, sewing, drawing, cooking and tattooing. Wow, what couldn't you do.
I'll also remember the many times you called the house to talk to Brian and spent awhile talking to me also. I know you felt I was a friend also, not just another reenactors wife. You always gave me a big hug when I saw you and I'll dearly miss that your not here anymore. I pray that your soul is with the Lord and the boys of the blue and gray. You definitely served them well.

Art you are like a brother to me. I know you are on the other side resting in the shade of a tree on a hot summer day, just as we often did together for the shelter from the heat of the sun. We have been welded together by that heat which forged a lasting friendship that I shall never leave behind. You may be gone, but you are not foregotten. Your creativity and honesty will live on forever. You have touched so many lives in such a real and positive way to so many people you may never know. You are forever hardcore to the core. I love you brother, it is hard to believe you are gone, I will see you on the boulders of Devils Den and the woods of Gettysburg. I will honor you, as you have honored so many. May God bless you! Until we meet again.

A mutual friend of mine and Art's once said of him "If there was ever a man that would know how to survive during a crisis situation it's Art. I would go right to Art's house if the stuff ever hit the fan!" Even though he's left us here on earth he'll always continue to survive in our memories and hearts. It was an honor to know him and we'll see him again one day.

Skip, to my fellow 1972 CHS graduate and one of the most talented, artistic, creative people I have ever known. But what I will always remember and cherish the most is you being there for my sister's and I when we lost our Mom. It had to have been over 20 years since I had seen you, but you were there for us. And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years. -Abraham Lincoln

You know you went too soon dad. You didnt even get to walk me down the aisle. I think im most heartbroken over that. But, Heartbreak aside we know you have lived more in your life then lives of ten men. You have seen more through those piercing blue eyes then anyone will ever know. You were a renascence man, well read, well spoken...And the skills that you were given artistly! To think you did all of it blind in one eye, its crazy. Your perception of life and all it had to give was spectacular not to mention most the time down right hysterical. Most will never know you as I did. As a loving protective and tell ya how it is father. But even though I didn't listen to you as much as i should have in all areas of my life, through out my life. I NEVER Questioned the advice you gave me. You were ALWAYS right. And you did your best with raising me with the cards your were given and the abilities you had. My fondest memory of u and I will be the Day I was able to sing with you playing gutiar with the rest of your old band at Billys house back in the late 90s, at a summer BBQ. Its the only time we ever came together and made music. The song was EVERLAST's "What it's Like" When the song was done I remember sitting alone on a set of stairs with tears in my eyes because it was the most magical moment of my life. I believe that souls are able to pick the parents they are born to. And even though we cant remember that part of our journey entering the world. I have to believe that I knew I wasn't able to have you for 100 years, but it was a trade off. And my choice was Quality over Quantity. I Picked You, to be my father. And It was the best decition I have ever and will ever make ~Your Daughter, April~Lynn Stone xoxo

Skip was a wonderful man - a true gentleman in every sense of the word, a jack-of-all-trades and master of all. I met Skip when I was just 13, when he came to our house Christmas caroling with Karl Guemple, and my friend, Cathy O'Brien, and I decided to join them. We lost touch after high school, but I never forgot him, and we were reconnected through FB about a year or so ago. I was looking forward to seeing him in the spring when he was going to do my son's next tattoo. I am so sorry that will not be possible now. I pray comfort over his family and friends, and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the hole he has left in so many people's lives will never be filled until the reunion in the afterlife. God bless.

Art was indeed the greatest Civil War living history practicioner I ever met. He truly became a 19th century person, soldier or civilian, whenever he donned the garb, which was always authentic to the last stitch. He will be sorely missed by the living history and Civil War studies community, both in New Jersey and nationally.

Words can not convey the sorrow felt by all of us you touched. You were a true gentleman in the very real sense of the term. Your willingness to share with all and your true love of what you did was contagious. Know that Sally and I hold you and your family in our hearts and prayers. We will think of you every time we walk the Battlefield. We feel honored to have known you. God bless your family. I know you are already sitting at His right hand.

Art was one of those rare people at a historical event where everyone who met or saw him thought "wow, he stepped right out of a book" - and he did. He was one of the finest historians and craftsmen I've ever met, and his loss is great within the historical community.
