George Hinson Obituary

George Barker Hinson

Sea Girt

George Barker Hinson was born on Feb. 24, 1924 in Manhattan, NY, and he passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 in Huntsville, AL. He was the son of William Jerome Hinson and Nora (Barker) Hinson. George developed a love of faith and singing as a youth, joining the Boys Choir of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan when he was eight years old. The young choir boys lived in the school and studied there in a program modeled after English boarding schools. George later attended Trinity Day School in New York City. After he graduated, he attended Georgia Technical University.

George's college education, like many at the time, was interrupted by World War II. George enlisted and served as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, VA. Following his military service, he returned to Georgia Tech where he was awarded a degree in Engineering. George was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. He worked in several engineering jobs, at home and abroad, until he settled in East Orange, NJ with his parents.

He was an excellent tennis player and a member for many years of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange. He had an indelible passion for investing and predicting the stock market, and as an engineer, he was an inveterate tinkerer. George loved the water as a sailor and swimmer, and he was most happy when he could walk along the shore with friends. He was also a keen story teller with a remarkable knowledge of British history. He always had time for family, and his many nieces and nephews affectionately called him "The Uncle."

George was a devout Episcopalian throughout his life. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Orange, NJ for many years. When he left the city, he became a 40-year parishioner at Saint Uriel's Episcopal Church in Sea Girt, NJ, where he found great joy as a member of the choir and with the many friends he made. Due to declining health, he moved to Huntsville, AL several years ago so he could be close to family.

George was predeceased by his brother, William J. Hinson Jr. He is survived by his sister, Muriel Hinson Webb and her husband Major General William L. Webb Jr. of Vienna, VA; his nephews, Colonel George Webb and his wife Rita of Topeka, KS; Colonel William Webb III and his wife Kay of Huntsville, AL; and his two nieces, Lucinda and Alicia Webb of Vienna, VA. He has three great-nieces, five great-nephews, two great-great-nieces and six great-great-nephews. He was devoted to and much loved by his family.

A burial mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 at St. Uriel's Episcopal Church in Sea Girt. Interment will follow at the Atlantic View Cemetery in Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to "Still Serving Veterans" at 224 Spragins St. NW, Huntsville, AL 35801.
