Joseph L. Bonney Jr., 90, formerly of Interlaken and Glen Mills, PA, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014. He was born Sept. 13, 1923 in New Brunswick to Harriet and Joseph Bonney Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII taking part in the Invasion of Normandy in June, 1944 followed by the Battle of the Bulge in France. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism while serving the 28th Division - 110th Infantry.
Upon his return, he married his true love, Ruth C. Gardner on Nov. 17, 1945 in Charleston, SC. They spent many years raising their three children in Interlaken. Joe was an avid golfer, setting records at Deal Country Club, where all of the Bonney's were members. The family also owned the local Hertz Rent A Car franchises, which resulted in Joe and Ruth relocating to PA in 1969. Thus began a new life for them and their youngest daughter Melissa. They became members of the Concord Country Club which brought new and lasting friendships into their lives. They worshipped at Concord Liberty Presbyterian Church.
Joe was predeceased by his wife of 57 years in 2003. Surviving are his daughter, Carolyn Eyerman of Little Silver; son, Joseph III and his wife Barbara of Wilmington, DE; daughter, Melissa Harron and husband Steve of Boothwyn, PA; and brother, Robert S. Bonney and wife Ann of Tinton Falls. At the time of his death, he was very proud of his 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family is comforted that Dad has moved on to eternal life with his Savior and being reunited with his beloved Ruth. His time spent here will be forever embedded in our hearts and he will be sorely missed.
A memorial service celebrating his life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at the New Life Christian Church, 125 Bay Ave., Highlands, NJ 07732. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Love Inc., 15 Meridian Road, Eatontown, NJ 07724.
