Alice Jean Roche

Alice Jean Roche, of Brielle, passed away on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. Jean was born in Point Pleasant Beach and graduated from Point Pleasant Beach HS in 1948. She received her Bachelor's degree in 1952 from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. She was retired from sales at Macy's in Eatontown and proudly participated in countless Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades in New York City. Jean was also an owner of Risden's Beach in Point Pleasant Beach.

However, Jean's family was the most important aspect of her life. She met the love of her life, Don, on the their first day of high school in Point Pleasant Beach where they shared lockers next to one another. Through their life together, they raised eight children.

Jean learned to sew from her mother and loved to sew when her children were young. She graciously used this skill to sew uniforms for the Joshua Huddy Fife & Drum Corps in Colts Neck where she lived while raising her family. Jean was also an athlete; an avid tennis player who played with true passion and love of the sport until she was 75.

For many years after her retirement, Jean shared her time with the Senior Hikers Group of the Monmouth County Park System exploring the various hiking trails in and around Monmouth County. In more recent years, she found great company with members of the Riverview Seniors of Brielle enjoying exercise, bingo, and meals.

Having O negative blood, Jean was a sought after blood donor for the Central Jersey Blood Bank and after losing her husband from cancer, she became a platelet pheresis donor. She was so committed to helping those affected by cancer that she was honored numerous times by the Blood Bank as one of their top platelet pheresis donors.

Jean is predeceased by her parents, Alice & William Risden Sr.; her brother, William Risden Jr.; her husband, J. Donald Roche, in 1993 and their eldest, Steve, who passed away only last year in 2013. She is survived by her sons and their wives, David & Leslie Roche, Freehold; Bill & Robyn Roche, Manalapan; and Bob & Jacqui Roche, of Australia as well as her daughters and their spouses, Cindy & Darryl Pope, Upper Freehold; Susan Roche, Point Pleasant; Alice & Loren Lyons, Brielle; Carolyn & Jay Morgan, West Long Branch; 12 grandchildren and the many friends and acquaintances who came to know her over the years, as well as the five cats who she cared for and made for good company.

Jean will be interred privately at Greenwood Cemetery in Brielle next to Don and with the Risden family. Friends are welcome and invited to visit with her family from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 at Simko's Restaurant, Higgins Avenue, Brielle, to reminisce and celebrate her life.
