Catherine Beirne, RN, 94, of Leonardo, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was born in Jersey City and lived there most of her life, graduating from St. Aloysius High School and later from the Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing. After graduating in 1936, she worked in the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City eventually becoming an instructor for post graduate students. In 1946, she married Francis X Beirne. In 1970, she moved to her summer residence in Leonardo. She was a faithful communicant of St. Agnes Church, where she was active in the Rosary Altar Society and the Senior Citizens group, as well as volunteering at the Thrift Shop. She was a member of the Alumni Association for the Jersey City Medical Center and the St. Aloysius High School. She was also a member of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society and the former Leonardo Taxpayers Association.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Catherine; her husband, Francis X.; her brother, John; and brother-in-law, Walter Walling. She will always be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt and most especially a registered nurse.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Catherine and Richard of Leonardo; her sister, Joan Waling of Atlantic Highlands; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive their friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 17 at John P. Condon Funeral Home, 804 Highway 36, Leonardo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18 at St. Agnes Church, 103 Center Ave., Atlantic Highlands. Interment will follow in Bayview Cemetery, Leonardo. In lieu of flowers, Catherine had asked that expressions of sympathy be sent to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 103 Center Ave., Atlantic Highlands, NJ 0716.
