Charles L. Anderson Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep at Ocean Medical Center Hospice in Brick on Friday, March 15, 2013 with family by his side.
Charles was born and raised in East Orange and attended the University of Alabama until drafted into service in the United States Army in July of 1941. During WWII, he was in an antiaircraft division that deployed to North Africa, Sicily and Italy from 1941 to 1945. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant during his WWll service. Upon his honorable discharge, he completed his college degree in Physical Education at Panzer College in Orange, New Jersey where he met his future wife, Jeanne M. Kirby. After graduation, he taught physical education at Upsala College in East Orange. In 1950, as a reservist, he was brought back to serve in the Korean conflict, serving 2 more years stateside at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin as a Drill Sergeant. Upon finishing his military service, he taught at Irvington High School. Later, he and his wife settled in Brick Twp., where they raised a family. Charles worked for Robert A. Morsell Construction company until 1978, when he began work at Johnson's Hardware in Point Pleasant Beach and later Beaver Dam Hardware in Point Pleasant.
"Charlie" as he was fondly known by friends and coworkers, was an avid sportsman, fisherman and golfer. He was president of the Point Pleasant Surf Club in the early 1960's. He and his best friend, Joe Spader, spent many years fly fishing for salmon at the Miramichi River in Canada and supporting the watershed conservation efforts there. Returning to golf after many years hiatus, he was proud that at 78, he shot his age.
Charlie is survived by his three children, Lee Campbell, Janet Anderson-Briggs and her husband Mike, and Eric Anderson and his wife Kathy, as well as his brother-in-law, Alan Kirby, and many nieces and nephews. He was "PopPop" to his 4 grandchildren, Christine Costello and her husband Jerry, Katie Wiegand and her husband Jason, Trevor and Kerry Anderson and his great-granddaughter, Chloe Costello. Charlie was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne on January 9th of this year.
Aside from his role as husband, father and grandfather, Charlie was most proud of his military service. He contributed to many veterans charities. We will miss his booming voice, his smile and his great stories. Whether known as Charlie, Dad, Pop, or PopPop, he was loved by all the people in his life.
He will be interred with his wife Jeanne at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org). Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to colonialfuneralgroup.com.
