Doris Arbus
AGE: 91 • Delray Beach, FL
Doris Julie Arbus, died on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Lakeview Nursing Home in Delray Beach, Florida. She was someone who could make anyone smile, laugh, and feel better about themselves and the world around them. An incredible mom, Nanny to her grandchildren, friend to all, even people she had just met. Everyone was welcome and comfortable in her presence. But most of all an incredible wife to her husband of 72 years, Sam Arbus.
She grew up in the Bronx, NY, where she loved sports. A Yankee fan, she was at Lou Gehrig day in 1939, crying for her fallen hero. In 1942, she met and fell in love with Sam and they married May 29, 1943. A marriage that was filled with love, song and laughter.
She was tremendous as an actress, songwriter and director, first at the Whitestone Hebrew Center in Queens, where she and Sam raised their three children. She continued that hobby in her life as a retiree in Florida, at both Coco Woods Estates and Rainberry Bay in Del Ray Beach. She also loved playing tennis, bowling, canasta and dominoes. And most of all, she loved her family. That included the entire Arbus and Julie families, and her closest friends, who were like family to her.
Mrs. Arbus was predeceased by her oldest son, Alan Arbus, who passed away in March of 2013 in Pasadena, California. She is survived by her loving family, her husband of 72 years, Sam Arbus; her son and his wife, Debbie and Marty Arbus of Wayside, NJ; her daughter, Linda and her life partner, Marguerite Scandiffio of Maplewood, NJ; her daughter-in-law, Liz Arbus of Pasadena, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melissa Arbus Sherry and her husband J.P. Sherry, Jessica Arbus and her husband, Evan Zuccarelli, and Luciana Arbus-Scandiffio.
Chapel services are 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn. Burial will follow at Beth El Cemetery, Paramus. Shiva will be observed at the Arbus residence in Wayside, NJ beginning Thursday evening.
