Doris D. Booraem, 97, of Burlington VT, passed away peacefully Christmas Day 2013. Born in South River, January 11, 1916, to the late Bertha and Frederick Doeler, Doris, a graduate of South River High School and Drake Business College, married Raymond D. Booraem Jr. on January 7, 1941. A communicant of Corpus Christi Parish, she was a secretary at Dupont Film Company, and retired after 20 years as secretary to the Principal of South River High School. She assisted her husband with his photography business for 25 years and was known for her hand coloring of portraits.
She is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Elizabeth Booraem, Burlington VT; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Edward Karytko, West Kennebunk, ME; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her faithful companion, Sunny.
Active in the Girl Scouts of America she served as chairperson of the South River Girl Scouts Association and was awarded the highest Scouting award the "Thanks Badge." A founding trustee of the South River Historical and Preservation Society, she served as chairperson of the South River Bicentennial Committee "Town Quilt" project presently on display in the South River Public Library.
After her husband's death in 1971, she moved to Rossmoor in Jamesburg keeping active with travel, golf, and playing bridge. A dedicated wife, mother and friend, she will be remembered for her quick humor and can-do attitude.
Doris will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Washington Monumental Cemetery in South River. Contributions to benefit Girl Scouting may be made in her honor to the Little House Association of South River, PO Box 321, South River NJ 08882.
