Emanuel H. "Manny" Mullen, 92, of Ocean, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. He was born on June 24, 1920, grew up in Brooklyn, NY and earned a BA from Michigan State College. Manny spent four years in General Patton's Army during World War II, serving as a forward observer in the field artillery. He left as a corporal and was decorated with a bronze star for bravery. Manny married Eileen Commanday, the love of his life, in 1953, and together they had four children. He joined his father in running the NY NJ Cleaners and Dyers in Asbury Park. About 1960, he founded Monmouth Plastics, manufacturing flame retardant plastics. He was past Chairman of the Employer's Legislative Committee of Monmouth County and a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
In addition to his business, Manny was devoted to his family and to many community organizations, including the Jewish Community Center in Deal Park, of which he was proud to be a founding member, and chairman of the board of governors; the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County, B'nai Brith, United Way, Monmouth County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Boy's Club of Asbury Park, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Manny fearlessly spoke his mind and contributed much of his time to his community.
He is survived by his four loving children, Laurie, David, Andrea, and Daniel; his sister, Blossom Robbins; and nine grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, Anna, Nina, Leah, Harry, Rebecca, Eve, and Samuel. He will be deeply missed. May his memory be a blessing.
