Evelyn Hendel Troy

Evelyn Hendel Troy, 89, died on Saturday September 28, 2013 at Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, PA. Born in Jersey City, she was the daughter of the late Christian Paul Hendel and Anna Christine Benson Hendel.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

Evelyn went to work as a secretary, teller and receptionist at the Plainfield Savings Bank in 1943 after graduating from North Plainfield High School, Class of 1941, attending Banking School and worked there until retiring as Assistant Treasurer in 1953 to raise her family.

Evelyn and her husband, Ken, moved to Fanwood in 1953.

Through the years she also assisted her husband at the family business, Troy Lock Co., in Plainfield.

She was a lifelong member of St. Peters' Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Plainfield and most recently joined St. Stephen Lutheran Church in South Plainfield due to St. Peters closing.

At St. Peters, she was a choir member for 72 years, on the Church Council, taught Sunday school for 30 years, member of Lutheran Church Women and Past President of Church Women United in the Plainfield Area. She also served on the State Synod Mission Committee in Trenton.

She studied voice with Elizabeth Dunning, contralto soloist from Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. She sang in many Oratorios presented under the direction of Dr. Charlotte Garden, former organist and choir director at Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church. She was soloist at St. Peter's and many Plainfield area churches. During WWII, she sang and soloed with Bound Brook and Plainfield Community Choruses. She was also a member of the Queen City Chapter of Sweet Adelines for nine years under the direction of Edward P. Cole.

She was pre deceased by her brothers Elmer B and Paul B. Hendel. In addition to her beloved husband of 64 years, Kenneth, she is survived by her loving sons and their wives, Robert Paul and Jeanne Troy Mechanicsburg, PA and Thomas Kenneth and Sheree Troy of Lincolnton, NC; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn Troy Yeager (John) and Jessica Christine Troy Bellows (D.J.); her brother-in-law Howard Troy, and many loving nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet at the church for services, St. Stephens Lutheran Church, 3145 Park Ave., South Plainfield, on Friday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains. Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, on Thursday evening from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 8765 West Higgins Road, Chicago, IL 60631-4101.
