Former Neptune City Mayor Holmes A. Adams

AGE: 92 • Neptune City

Former Neptune City Mayor Holmes A. Adams, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. A lifelong resident of Monmouth County and member of the "greatest generation," Holmes was born in Atlantic Highlands on Nov. 14, 1920. He was a graduate of Neptune High School, class of 1938. In 1942, at the height of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably until 1945. After his service to the nation in World War II, Holmes managed Curt's Garage, a family-owned auto repair business on Main Street in Avon-By-The-Sea that he later came to successfully own and operate. Simultaneously, he began his lifelong commitment to public service. In 1953, while a young father, Holmes became the first male president of the Neptune City Roosevelt School PTA. Around this same time, he was also instrumental in establishing the first Cub Scout Pack in Neptune City, and became involved in many other civic endeavors. A common thread of Holmes' early community involvement was a commitment to the youth and the elderly.

From 1954 to 1968, Holmes served on the Neptune City Borough Council. In 1968, Holmes became Mayor of Neptune City, a position he held for a quarter-century until his retirement in 1991. During his nearly 40 years as an elected official, Holmes championed public works projects that benefitted children and seniors. He was instrumental in establishing the Neptune City Housing Authority. In 1972, Holmes was the architect of a lawsuit that led to the New Jersey Supreme Court's landmark decision reaffirming the public's right to open beach access. Numerous parks and other public spaces throughout the community were created and preserved during his time as Mayor. One of the many community projects Holmes oversaw as Mayor was the construction of the recreational complex on Sylvania Avenue. After his retirement, that Complex was renamed Adams Field in his honor. An expansion and renovation of the complex has occurred in recent years, and the site was renamed the Holmes A. Adams Recreation Complex. Two streets in Neptune City are also named in Holmes' honor, Adams Way and Holmes Court.

After his retirement from public service and the family business, Holmes spent his free time traveling with his wife, Mildred, and watching their grandchildren's sporting events. Rarely missing a game, Holmes and Mildred were fixtures on the sidelines and viewed as part of the teams. In one of their many road trips, the couple traveled across the country, taking the time to stop and enjoy the nation's parks, monuments, and other open spaces. Devout in his faith, Holmes was an active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Neptune City. He sat on a number of committees, and held several other leadership positions within his Church.

Holmes was predeceased by his parents, Curtis and Thelma Kauffman; and his brother, Curtis Kauffman Jr. Surviving are his beloved wife of 69 years, the former Mildred Haas; the couple's two children, Barbara Manson and her husband James of San Diego, CA, and Robert H. Adams and his wife Judith of Neptune. Holmes had 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 2 months to 15 years-old.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Francioni, Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home, 1200 10th Ave., Neptune. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at the funeral home. Internment will immediately follow the funeral at Monmouth Memorial Park, Route 33, Tinton Falls. In lieu of flowers, Holmes' family asks that donations be made to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation for the Holmes Adams Nursing Scholarship Fund, 1345 Campus Parkway, Suite A2, Neptune, NJ 07753.
