Garrett G. Buttel Jr., 65, of Leonardo, NJ, died Monday, December 31, 2012, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. He was born in Montclair, and lived in the Middletown area for 33 years. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Upsala College. He proudly served in the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. After being discharged from the Air Force in 1971, he accepted a position with the Veterans Administration and spent many years helping veterans and their dependents as a benefits counselor and field representative. This experience sparked a further interest in helping people. He returned to college earning a Masters Degree in counseling from Kean University. He later became certified by the Omni-Hypnosis Center and the Banyon Hypnosis Center. Garrett owned and operated Monmouth Hypnosis Center and was an accomplished Hypnotherapist for the last 10 years. He was a member of The National Guild of Hypnotists and Board Certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists, the oldest and largest hypnosis organization. He was also a published author, and a restaurant owner of the Ironside Pub, later known as Diane's Seafood Restaurant, in Union Beach. Garrett was the first president of the Union Beach Business Association founded in 1987. Garrett gave the gift of life as an organ and tissue donor with the New Jersey Sharing Network.
Surviving are his spouse of 33 years, Diane Carol Buttel; sister, Carol Jean Hay of FL; aunt, Veronica Haynes of Leonardo; his mother-in-law, Marilyn Recknagel of Kenilworth; two nieces, a nephew, and other dear family and friends along with his dogs, Petey and Max.

The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California, dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy, an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 6, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 3:30 pm and 8:30 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
