Gerald Michael "Jerry" Evans
AGE: 55 • West Palm Beach, FL
A loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, Jerry suffered a stroke on June 18, 2012 and, despite the prayers of his family and friends and the wonderful care given him by the Intensive Care Medical Team at St. Mary's Hospital, passed away in West Palm Beach, Florida on August 1, 2012. Gerald Michael Evans was 55 years old. Born on October 29, 1956, he grew up in Toms River, New Jersey. When Jerry was sixteen years old he wanted to spend the summer idly with his friends but his mother made him volunteer at the Sarah Miller School for Challenged Children. It was this experience that peaked his interest in special education. Jerry graduated from Monmouth University in Long Branch, New Jersey with a degree in Education and began teaching special education at Manchester Middle School. During this time he obtained his Masters Degree in Education and received a Certificate in Counseling from Monmouth University and became the Substance Abuse Counselor for the Manchester Township School District. After twenty-two years of service, Jerry moved to West Palm Beach in 1998 to help raise his two nephews after the passing of their father. UJ, as his nephews called him, began his career anew in the classroom but was soon promoted to the position of Procedural Compliance Coordinator, Department of Exceptional Education for the Palm Beach County School District. He believed that God gave each of us a talent and his was to shepherd children.
He is predeceased by his father Gerald Patrick Evans; and is survived by his mother, Marie Evans; two sisters Diane Evans and Noreen Zanft; and two nephews, Burk and Zachary Zanft, all of West Palm Beach; plus relatives and countless friends, colleagues, families and students he has known.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401 with Rev. Aidan Lacy, Chaplain at St. Mary's Medical Center, officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you do something nice for someone else as Jerry did through out his life.
