Herbert H. Cofer

AGE: 82 • Long Branch

Herbert H. Cofer, 82, of Long Branch, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown. Born and raised in Long Branch, Mr. Cofer served in the Korean War in the Army Medical Corps, 25th Infantry Division. He was a detective with the Long Branch Police Department, also serving in the department as a command sergeant major, retiring in 1985 after 28 years of service. He was the recipient of numerous commendations and acknowledgments for his service in the U.S. Army and the Long Branch Police Department. Mr. Cofer was a member of Second Baptist Church, Long Branch for many years. He was also a member of the Policemen's Benevolent Association. He was an avid golfer, participating in the sport for most of his adult life. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to many.

He is predeceased by his parents, John and Sarah Cofer; and his brothers, Harold and James. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Chrystal A. Cofer of Long Branch; a son, Herbert H. Cofer Jr. and daughter-in-law, Judy of Foothill Ranch, Calif.; and daughters, Dawn Jackson of Red Bank, Karen Williams and son-in-law, Alexander of Barnegat, and Terese Boyer and son-in-law, David of Ellenwood, Ga. He is also survived by his brother, Leroy Cofer and sister, Martha Pattisall, both of Long Branch; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear sisters-in-law, Rosalind Seawright, Thalia Thornton, Marion Cofer, and Louise Thornton. There are 10 grandchildren, Shanda, Alesha, Rana, Aaron, Sherese, Sammy, Rhiannon, Herbie III, Elijah, and Rachel; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25 until the funeral at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, Liberty Street, Long Branch. Interment in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. Arrangements entrusted to Cofer Memorial Home, Red Bank.
