John H. Mahr died on Feb. 15, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. He was 88 years old. Born in Newark to Michael and Anna Ehas Mahr, he resided there before moving to the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township 58 years ago.
Mr. Mahr served honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1941-1945 on the USS Richardson, a troop carrier to Europe, Africa and Middle East. Mr. Mahr was employed as a maintenance machinist by RCA Corporation in Harrison for 29 years and then worked for and retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a communicant of Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Avenel and a former member of the Deutscher Club of Clark and the Hungarian Gypsy Club of Rahway.
Mr. Mahr was predeceased by two sons, Richard E. Mahr in 2000 and Louis P. Mahr in 1982; and three brothers, Lawrence Mahr, Michael Mahr and Frank Mahr. Surviving are two sons, John R. Mahr of Plainsboro and William H. Mahr of Buffalo, NY; two sisters, Ann Lang of Rotonda West, FL and Matilda Capano of South Orange; three brothers, Joseph Mahr of Manlius, NY, Paul Mahr of Neptune and Walter Mahr of Mililani, HI; three grandchildren; and a great granddaughter. Funeral services will take place on Feb. 20, 2013 at 9:30am from the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (www.costello-koyen.com) 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10am at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church, Avenel. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
