John J. Getty

AGE: 82 • Metuchen

John J. Getty, 82, of Metuchen died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013 at home. Born in Metuchen, he was a lifelong Borough resident. John was a graduate of St. Francis School in Metuchen, St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick and The Merchant Marine Academy.

He served in the US Army for two years during the Korean War. He was employed by NJ Bell and AT&T as a systems analyst, before his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral; he was a member of Metuchen Volunteer Fire Co. and the NJ State Exempt Firemen's Association. He was a volunteer at McCarrick Care Center and other area care centers where he was known as "Ukulele John." John enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes. He was an avid NY Giants, MY Mets and Notre Dame fan.He was predeceased by his brother Charles H. Getty, Jr.

Surviving are his wife Barbara (nee Schafer), two sons Patrick J., and his wife Mary of Metuchen, Thomas F. of Metuchen; two daughters Ann E. of Edison and Regina M. Gibbins and her husband Nicholas of Swindon England; a sister Helen Getty of Metuchen; and three grandchildren Patrick, Joseph and Kathryn. Services will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 at 9:45 am from The Costello-Runyon Funeral Home 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen ( followed by a 10:15 am Mass of Resurrection at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, interment is at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway. Visitation is Monday 2-4 & 7-9. Memorial donations may be made to the .
