John M. Sylvester, Sr.

AGE: 89 • Spring Lake

John M. Sylvester, Sr., 89, of Spring Lake passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at his son's home in Hamilton, NJ. John was born in Avon, NJ. He was a graduate of Manasquan High School and was an Army Air Corps veteran of WW II serving from 1943 - 1945. John served as a police officer in Spring Lake for 39 years. He attained the rank of Chief of Police in 1971 and retired in 1985. Upon his retirement from the police department he became a toll collector for the Garden State Parkway for 15 years. John was a lifetime member and past president of the Spring Lake Fire Company #1, a member of the American Legion Post 432 for 35 years, a retired life member of the NJ Association of Chief of Police and a member of Local 50 PBA.

John was predeceased by his parents, William and Margaret Sylvester; two sisters, Eva Goss and Margaret Todd; two step-sisters, Edith Harker and Catherine Nickloson; a brother, Robert Sylvester and a step-brother, William Sylvester. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Heyniger Sylvester of Spring Lake; two sons and two daughters-in-law, John, Jr. and his wife Doreen of Berkley Heights, NJ and Stephen and his wife Patricia of Hamilton, NJ. John is also survived by a brother, Charles Sylvester and his wife Mary Jane of Spring Lake, NJ and a sister, Helen Carman and her husband Leon of Groveland, NY; three granddaughters, Kristin, Alexis and Kelsey and a grandson, Christopher.

Family and friends are invited to call Saturday, March 30 from 2-5 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. Funeral service and burial will be private at Brig Gen William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Spring Lake Fire Company #1, 1007 5th Avenue Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
