John Michael Walsh

Little Silver

John Michael Walsh, known as Jack, passed away at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012. Jack was born in Jersey City and was a graduate of St. Peter's Prep and St. Peter's College. After receiving his law degree from Fordham University, he served in the U.S. Army Office of the Judge Advocate General at Ft. Bragg, NC, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, cited for his contributions to the operations, morale and welfare of the command. Admitted to the New Jersey State Bar in 1958, Jack was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States of America in 1966 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1977. Recognized as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney in 1982, he practiced with dedication and care throughout more than four decades in Jersey City and Monmouth County. He was appointed to the Committee on Character under the Supreme Court of New Jersey in 1999, holding that position until his death.

A resident of Little Silver for 45 years, Jack served on the Red Bank Regional High School Board of Education for nine years, including two terms as board president. He was a member of the Catherine E. Gahler Scholarship Advisory Committee at Red Bank Regional from its inception in 1989. Jack was an active parishioner of the Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven, where he was a lector and, with his wife Margot, a volunteer for Family Promise and a long-time member of the Pre-Cana team for engaged couples. For many years, the Walshes were members of Surfrider Beach Club in Sea Bright. Jack loved the summers, listening to Yankee games and music on the beach. He enjoyed sharing his appreciation of classical music and opera and treasured his memories of trips with his family and friends to Ireland, France, Italy, Mexico, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. Jack will be remembered as a gentle man of intelligence, quick wit, humility and generous spirit in a life filled with happiness, kindness and love.

Surviving are his wife, Margot and their four children, Jacquelyn Walsh of Rumson, John Walsh, his wife Joan Alker and their children, Emma and Vera Walsh-Alker of Washington, DC, Rob Walsh, his wife Cristy and their children, Jack and Charlie of Winchester, Massachusetts; Andrew Walsh and his wife Lisa and their children Ellie and Brady of Little Silver, New Jersey. He also leaves two brothers, Jerry Walsh of Elberon, New Jersey, and Ed Walsh of Manchester, New Jersey. His mother and father, May and Buck Walsh, as well as his brother, Fr. Bob Walsh, SJ, and sister-in-law, Mary Walsh, predeceased him.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5 at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at the Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Road, Fair Haven. Following the mass, interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Chapel Hill Road, Middletown. The family requests that memorial donations to honor Jack be made to the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank (www.parkerfamilyhealthcenter.org).
