John Robert Rafter, 82, of Bayville passed away on July 6, 2013. "Jack" or "Jackie" was born in Orange, New Jersey on December 6, 1930 and grew up in Union. He graduated from Union High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth "Betty" Lospinoso in October of 1950.
He served in the United States Navy as a machinist mate from 1952 to 1954 aboard the USS Aucilla and the USS Hyades.
Soon after his military service, he built a home in Matawan New Jersey, where he would raise his family. In the late 1950's, He and his father Robert M. Rafter started Rafter Heating Co, later Hydronic Heating Corp. They installed heating and air conditioning systems in hundreds of new homes in New Jersey, many in Monmouth County during the 1970's and 80's. He would run the business with his son John, until his retirement in 1996. He had a lifelong passion for boats, especially wooden boats. He owned many beautiful vessels and spent much of his free time restoring and operating them off of the Jersey Coast. He loved taking family and friends fishing and there were many fun adventures to talk about over the years. During his retirement, he and Betty spent many winters living and having fun in Melbourne Beach Florida where they had a second home. His family, friends and neighbors knew him as a man who could build or fix anything, an ability he was very generous with throughout his life. He loved family gatherings, listening to music and cooking. He especially loved telling stories about the Navy, interesting people he knew and of course, his boats.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Elizabeth Rose Rafter; A brother, Robert M. Rafter Jr. of Florida; his sons Glenn Rafter, Lakewood; John Rafter, his wife Colleen, Freehold Township and Jeffrey Rafter, his wife Judy, Brick Township. John is also survived by five grandchildren, Shawn, Christine, Garrett, Jesse and Cody.
