Joseph E. DeGonge, 85, of Manchester passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 13, 2013 surrounded by his family at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. A graduate of General Motors Institute in Detroit, MI, his career spanned over 30 years in the automobile industry. He began as owner and operator of Joe-D Motors in Hamden, CT, General Manager and Vice President of Steven's World of Wheels in Bristol, CT, and General Manager of Wasley Buick Oldsmobile in Bristol, CT until 1983. He was known for his innovative marketing strategies such as taking peanuts, bananas, and even a lioness in trade for used cars. He retired to Toms River, NJ, where he served as General Manager of Toms River Country Club and was an active member of the Country Club Mangers Association of NJ. Born in Kearny, NJ, he resided in Bristol, CT for 27 years and Toms River, NJ for 23 years before moving to Manchester, NJ 9 years ago. He served in the Navy during WW II from 1946-48. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #12940, Lakehurst, VFW Post # 129 Toms River, Italian American Club in Renaissance and past president for the Seaside Heights Italian American Club. In addition, he sang with the Raconteurs of Renaissance. An avid golfer, he was a member of Chippanee Golf Club in Bristol, CT, an active member of UNICO, and served as Justice of the Peace in Wallingford, CT. Surviving are his beloved wife of 57 years, Ermaline Spinello DeGonge, daughter, Marcy DeGonge Manfredi of Oakhurst, son, Joseph DeGonge and wife Heather of Roswell, GA, sister, Marie Coules of Hawthorne, 4 grandsons Nicholas, Lucas, Alexander, Owen, and a 5th grandson on the way. In addition, he leaves his dog Katie and loving nieces and nephews. He will always be missed and loved by everyone who has had the great pleasure of knowing him. Visitation is Saturday, August 17th from 1-6 pm at Oliverie Funeral Home 2925 Ridgeway Rd Manchester with a 3 pm religious service.
