AGE: 88 • Sea Girt, formerly of Short Hills

Mary Ellen Theresa (nee Burke) O'Connor, of Sea Girt, formerly of Short Hills, entered into eternal life on October 26 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 88 years old.

Mary Ellen was born in Atlantic City and raised in Ventnor and Margate. She attended the University of Pennsylvania. Mary Ellen taught 4th grade at Mary Lawn of the Oranges, and later worked as the office manager for her husband, the late Joseph J. O'Connor MD, who was an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine. Mrs. and Dr. O'Connor raised their family in Short Hills, where Mary Ellen enjoyed playing golf, tennis and paddle tennis at the Maplewood Country Club, then later at Racquets Club of Short Hills and Essex Fells Country Club as well as skiing with her family at Windham Mountain in NY State and traveling abroad. She was also a past president of the Dr's Wives Club for St Mary's Hospital and Hospital of the Oranges. She was a parishioner of Saint Rose of Lima RC Church in Short Hills, where she was involved with the Ladies Auxillary for many years, until moving to Sea Girt where she was a parishioner Saint Mark's RC Church, and loved spending her days in her garden and with her grandchildren.

Mary Ellen is predeceased by her husband, Joseph J. O'Connor MD and her parents, Thomas F. and Florence (nee Donaghy) Burke, her brother Francis Xavier (Bobo) Burke and sister Jeanne Durkin. She is survived by her son, Joseph F. O'Connor II; her daughter Kelly Ann O'Connor; her son Kevin C. O'Connor and his wife Christine Carey, and four grandchildren, Caroline, Caitlin, Matthew and Alexis and her brother Thomas Burke and many other nieces and nephews

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 29 at 11:15AM at Saint Rose of Lima RC Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills NJ. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover NJ. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home, 801 D Street, Belmar NJ 07719.
