Murray Alvin Kessler, M.D., age 86, died Sunday, January 26, 2013 (Shevat 18). He was a resident of Four Seasons, Lakewood, NJ, for the last 14 years. Prior to that he lived in Long Branch, NJ for many years. He was born March 1, 1927 in the Bronx, NY.
At age of seven he had a stroke which left him paralyzed on his right side. This did not stop him from going to school, even though it caused him to lose six months of schooling. Later, he moved to Asbury Park, NJ and then Trenton NJ and then back to Asbury Park. He graduated from Trenton Central High School when he was 16. He graduated Rutgers Pharmacy School at age 19 and then went on to graduate from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA. at age 23. He did his internship and residency training in Pediatrics at Beth Israel Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, both in New York City and St Michael's Hospital, Newark, NJ. He practiced Pediatrics for many years in Long Branch and later in Freehold, NJ, too. He began studying Allergy and Immunology as the field began to develop in the 1960's, eventually becoming board certified in Allergy and Immunology. He practiced in both offices until his retirement in 2000. His primary interests outside of his family and his work were bridge, gardening. and Israel. When he was younger, he contributed time and effort to help establish the State of Israel. He was a member of B'nai Brith for many years, and was involved with the UJA, chairing a physician committee at one point. He was very proud of becoming a Life Master at Bridge, and continued to play bridge until the last year of his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Phyllis Kessler, and by his children, Rabbi Joel and Arleen Kessler,Williamsport, PA, Drs. Connie and David Hirsh, New Albany, OH, and Dr. Dan and Marlene Kessler, Owings Mills, MD. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel and Nathan Kessler, Ariel, Alice and Harry Hirsh, and Toby Kessler. He was preceded in death by his parents Nathan Kessler and Minnie Seitz, and his brothers Leo and Paul Kessler, all of blessed memory.
Funeral Services will be held at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapel, Ocean NJ,Wed. Jan. 29, at 11:00 a.m. with internment at Chesed Shel Ames Cemetery, Neptune, NJ. Shiva will be held at the home of Phyllis Kessler in Lakewood NJ following burial. Donations would be appreciated to support Israel, Bnai Brith and/or the ADL.
