Norbert G. Van Bergen

AGE: 85 • Sea Girt

Norbert G. Van Bergen, 85, of Sea Girt, passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013. Born in Elizabeth, he resided in Westfield before moving to Sea Girt. He was a graduate of St. Benedict's Prep and Seton Hall University. Norb served with the United States Navy during WW II. He was employed at Mobil-Exxon as a Computer Programmer from 1953-1963 and then accepted a position as Program Director for the Union County C.Y.O -Archdiocese of Newark. He was an active member of the Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, and the food program of the Mercy Center, Asbury Park. During his retirement, he was a member of St. Mark's Holy Name Society where he promoted social and spiritual activities for the Parish and community. Norb's hand was always extended in greeting. His bright smile, sense of humor and genuine friendliness will be remembered but mostly especially his faith and love of family will be forever cherished.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Daly Van Bergen; and his children, Maribeth Yerks, Mariclare Lesniak and Matthew Van Bergen. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Gary and Bill; and his daughter-in-law, Heather. Norb was the loving grandfather of six and the great-grandfather of one-all held in high esteem. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph and his wife, Mary Ellen VanBergen, and many nieces and nephews from New Jersey and Long Island, NY. Loved and admired, being in Uncle Norb's company was always a joy.

Norb's family wishes to acknowledge the loving care received by Norb from the dedicated care givers and other staff of the Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center….you are loved.

Visiting will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt. Burial will follow at the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norb's name to St. Mark's Holy Name Society.
