Suzanne (Sue) Shankland

Suzanne (Sue) Shankland, 54, of Hampstead, NC, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Sue was born on March 22, 1958, in New Jersey, daughter of the late Honorable and Mrs. William Theodore Wichmann. An outstanding athlete, Sue attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Central Florida, where she played varsity basketball. Sue had a strong passion for golf, was four-time club champion at Rumson Country Club (Rumson, New Jersey), as well as a club champion at Porter's Neck Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina. While the co-owner of Topsail Greens, Sue developed her passion for cooking which led to a late-in-life career as an Executive Chef. Her lifelong love of football was cemented as she cheered her son and the Hoggard Vikings to the 2007 North Carolina State 4-A Championship. Sue's other passions included the beach, her friends, and rooting for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, from which her daughter graduated. To Sue, you were a friend from the first day, and she, a loyal friend forever.

Sue is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Dale, of the home; two children, daughter, Whitney Shankland of Raleigh, NC, son, Ian Shankland, of the home; one sister, Christine McHugh of Tinton Falls, NJ; two brothers, Ted and Tom Wichmann, of Ocean, NJ; a special aunt, Kathy Lacey of Marathon, FL and Sea Bright, NJ; and a variety of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held 11am Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
