Walter Bennett Jr.

AGE: 70 • Oceanport

Walter Bennett Jr., 70, of Oceanport, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Walter spent his childhood years in Colts Neck, Oceanport and Fair Haven, graduating from Rumson-Fair Haven High School, class of 1962. After graduation, Walter served with the U.S. Army as a helicopter crewman. After his discharge, Walter and his wife settled in Oceanport. Walter was a union carpenter for over 30 years with Local #2250, and was based at Monmouth Park Jockey Club, Oceanport. He retired in 2011. Walter always enjoyed his employment at Monmouth Park and all the friends that he made there. He always enjoyed working in his garden and puttering in his shop.

Walter is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda; a daughter, Lori and husband Steven Briskey of Oceanport; sister-in-law, Gail and husband Charles Van Way and niece Whitney, all of KS.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery Mausoleum, Oceanport.
