Philip Balaban

AGE: 83 • Fair Haven

Philip Balaban, 83, of Fair Haven, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at the King James Rehabilitation Center, Atlantic Highlands. He was born in 1928 in Poland, spending the majority of WWII in Russia, in Siberia. He later in lived in Munich, Germany, Geneva, Switzerland, and Tel Aviv and Haifa, Israel, where he served in the Israeli army. He emigrated to the United States in 1956, living New York City until he settled in Fair Haven in 1967 with his wife and children. He received the Ph.D. degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and the Diplom Ingeniur degree from the Technical University in Munich. Dr. Balaban joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1967, where he worked for almost 30 years. Prior to joining Bell Labs, he was with the Scientific Department of the Government of Israel; Contraves AG, Zurich; and Computer Systems Inc., New York. He was a professor of electrical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, as well as at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He published more than 50 papers, and was both an editor and an author of several books on modeling, analysis, and simulation of fiber optic and satellite communication systems. Dr. Balaban was a Fellow of the IEEE and was a recipient of the Bell Labs Distinguished Technical Staff Award.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anna Balaban; his son, Victor Balaban and his wife Jamie Weisman of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughter, Nona Balaban of Little Silver and her fiance, Dennis Drazin of Fair Haven; his four granddaughters, Ariel, Liana, Isabelle and Shira; his sister, Lucia Krotowski of Tel Aviv, Israel; his niece, Ayala Keren and her husband Yoram Keren, and their children and grandchildren, all of Tel Aviv, Israel. Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, NJ was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations can be made to the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, N.J.
