AGE: 57 • Oceanport

Richard A. Spahr, 57, of Oceanport, passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer - they gave him three months, he made it two years. Richard was a native of Sea Bright and a graduate of Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch. He served in the U.S. Navy for more than a decade, including multiple combat rescue deployments in the Persian Gulf. Upon leaving the military, he worked various jobs for Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch and other companies. Over the years, Richard was a proud member of the 84th Regiment of Foot Royal Highland Emigrant Corps Bagpipe Band and an avid volunteer for Holiday Express, proudly playing the roll of Santa Claus for the latter.

Richard was predeceased by his father, Alfred, and daughter, Susan. Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Bostwick) Spahr; son, Robert and his wife Courtney, of Oceanport; mother, June (Peterson) Spahr, of Middletown; brother, Steven Spahr and his wife Trisha, of Oceanport; sister, Kathleen (Spahr) Marchese and her husband Michael, of Middletown; and his two beautiful granddaughters, Kaileigh and Julianna.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4 from 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave., (corner of Third Ave.), Long Branch. Funeral Wednesday, 8:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 10 am Mass at St. Dorothea's Church.
