Harriet E. Kodama, 94, of Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014 at home. She was born in Rahway, grew up in Roselle Park and raised her family in Shrewsbury before moving to Tinton Falls in 2000. She earned a chemistry degree from the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass College) and worked as a food chemist at Sucre Blanc of NYC, Flako Food Company in northern NJ and the Agriculture College at Rutgers. Harriet was a member and an Elder of the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury and was actively involved with the Mission Belles and the Presbyterian Women's Association. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing.
Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Sidney P. Kodama, who she lovingly cared for from 1972-1992 after he suffered a stroke; her parents, David and Harriet Peterson; grandson, Peterson Kodama; and a brother-in-law, David Thomas. She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Ken and Anna Kodama of Riegelsville, PA and Doug and Cecilia Kodama of Shrewsbury; a sister, Marion Thomas of Valley Center, CA and five grandchildren, Emily, Alice, Sam, Sydney and Jesse Kodama.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the John E Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, followed by an 11:30 AM funeral service at the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury. Interment will follow at the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury, 352 Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury NJ 07702.
