Sofia Smirlis, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at the Reformed Church Home after fighting CHF for many years. She was a fighter and would often joke that she had at least nine lives. Whenever it seemed illness was taking over she would make a miraculous comeback, full of life.
Sofia was a wonderful cook. In particular, her tiropita and tsoureki will be missed by family and friends. She was a poker enthusiast and a tenacious player who would only accept a loss when she wasn't feeling well. Sofia was a beautiful woman who took great pride in her appearance and her favorite dress was the mint green gown she wore to her granddaughter's wedding.
Born on April 11, 1926 and raised in Piraeus, Greece, she married her childhood sweetheart Stamatis Smirlis on January 14, 1951. They were happily married for 63 years. Sofia was the devoted mother of two children, Pantelis and Ruby; grandmother of three, Dean (wife, Kristen), Stephen (wife, Evelyn) and Christina Sophia (husband, Nicholas); great-grandmother to Ardeth Margaret.
