AGE: 89 • Freehold Twp.

John Watson, 89, of Freehold Township died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. He passed peacefully while surrounded by his family. John was born in Lyon, France, to American parents serving the US government. Prior to attending college at Georgetown, he also lived in Nova Scotia and Jamaica. While in Georgetown he joined the Army and fought in World War II. He was gravely wounded in action in Germany and spent many months recovering in Britain. He and Ofelia were married in 1964. They have four children: Maria, John, Keith, and Alexander, whose spouses are Dwayne Perry, Sharon, Kimberly, and Rebecca. They have seven grandchildren: Lydia, Mark, Caitlin, John, Jacob, Kate, and Nolan. John also has a surviving sister, Betty. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert and sister, Joan.

John and Ofelia lived in Manhattan before moving to Freehold in 1968. He continued to work in New York as an editor for Standard & Poor's. He had an enduring curiosity and interest in many things: popular and classical music; books on history and culture; and art. He greatly enjoyed bridge and traveling with Ofelia to China, Russia, Norway, and elsewhere, strolling on the boardwalk at the beach, and the pursuits of his children and grandchildren.

Private services will be held under the direction of the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
