Norma Caridad Banta-Maute, 83, of Shrewsbury, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014, surrounded by her family in Punta Gorda, FL after a brief battle with cancer.
Norma was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 1, 1930, and grew up in Belmar, NJ. She graduated from Manasquan High School, and then graduated from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY with a BS and RN in nursing. She worked at Jersey Shore Medical Center as a Nursing Arts instructor and part-time hospital supervisor. She also taught at Forestdale School in Rumson.
Norma was married to Robert H. Banta in 1956, who predeceased her in 1971. She then raised her three sons by herself in Rumson. Her greatest joy was seeing them graduate from Duke University, University of Virginia, Yale Law School, and Monmouth University.
Norma remarried in 1992 to Charles C. Maute. She was a member of Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank where she served as a Deacon, Stephen Minister, and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Burnt Store Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda, FL. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood and Elizabeth Circle. Norma was an avid sports fan following the NY Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and most especially, Duke University basketball.
Norma was predeceased by her parents, Luis and Caridad Zawadzki, as well as her brother Luis Zawadzky Jr. She is survived by her husband, Charles C. Maute; her son, Robert H. Banta Jr., his wife Christina and two grandchildren; her son, Mark G. Banta, his wife Linda, and two grandchildren; her son Douglas J. Banta. She is also survived by Marilyn Lee; Barbara Maute and Philip Castiglione, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; Ruth Maute, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Marlene Zawadzky and four nieces.
There will be a private family burial. A memorial service at Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the
