AGE: 97 • Seaside Park

Irene M. Pitchell, 97 of Seaside Park, NJ died Monday March 30, 2014 at Kimball Medical Center. She was born and raised in Philadelphia but spent all her summers on K Street in Seaside Park, originally arriving by train (K Street stop), where her grandfather lived since the 1920's. She joined the U.S. Army during World War II and rose to the rank of Captain. Courageously, she moved to Seaside Park in 1954. She was a legal secretary at law offices in Toms River, Sutton - Yoder and Euart - Lomell until she retired. She was a devout communicant at Saint Catharine's Church in Seaside Park and loved to sing in the church choir. She and her late sister, Jean deFonteny were "Meals-On-Wheels" volunteers for many years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Dora deFonteny, her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Verna deFonteny of Philadelphia, her brother, Louis deFonteny and her sister Jean deFonteny, both of Seaside Park. She is survived by her son Mark Pitchell and his wife Anne, her sister-in-law Jeanne deFonteny, all of Seaside Park, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Sunday April 6, 2014 from 3 to 7 PM at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Avenue (at "I" Street), Seaside Park. A funeral mass will be offered on Monday at 10 AM at St. Catharine's RC Church, E Street, Seaside Park. Cremation and interment at the New Jersey Veteran's Cemetery will occur on a future date.
