Anthony J. Faccone, (known as GP, for Grandpa), 88, of Long Branch, died Saturday, April 12, 2014.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie in 2002 and his companion Dorothy Fernicola in 2013. Surviving are his children Dennis and his wife Pam Faccone and Andrew and his wife Jill Faccone, all from Eatontown along with 4 grandchildren, Garrett and his fiancé Laura Salvatore, Connor, Juliana and Drew Faccone.

Anthony was born and raised in Jersey City and was part of the Faccone's restaurant family that included Faccone's in Jersey City, Austin's on the boardwalk in Long Branch and Faccone's West End Sub Shop. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII and was a survivor of a Kamikaze attack on the USS Bunker Hill on May 11, 1945. During the attack, as a photographer's assistant, he took a photo that was published in every newspaper in America. The photo was also used as the cover for the album "Victory at Sea" and the book "Danger's Hour". He spent many years as the coordinator of the Bunker Hill reunion group. He was a pipefitter for 30 plus years with local 274 of Ridgefield, NJ. Before that he owned the Male Instinct clothing store in Long Branch.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 &7-9 pm Tuesday at Fiore Funeral Home, 882 Broadway, West Long Branch. Funeral service will be at 10 am Wednesday morning at the funeral home followed by entombment at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport. He loved bright colors, feel free to wear them if you attend the services.
