Helen A. O'Connell, of Wall, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2014, at Jersey Shore Medical Center after a brief illness. Helen was born January 9, 1936, in Bayonne, NJ, and resided there for many years before moving to Spring Lake Heights and her final home in Wall. She attended Holy Family Academy in Bayonne and went on to study in New York at St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing for her R. N. and Fordham University for a B. A. She began her nursing career at St. Vincent's in the ob/gyn area, where she specialized as a maternal and child care coordinator. She then was employed by the State of New Jersey to work with Medicaid clients. Her efforts outside work were extensive. She was an Associate of The Sisters of St. Joseph, Chestnut Hill, Pa., as well as being a volunteer in her parish of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, and The Center in Asbury Park. She was a former teacher of English as a Second Language and member of the Literacy Volunteers of America. In addition, she served on the medical staff of the Knights and Dames of Malta. Helen initiated a fund-raising luncheon on behalf of Holy Family Academy, the 25th anniversary of which was celebrated in 2013. She was well known for her efforts on behalf of many friends and individuals who needed assistance.
She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick J. and Helen Wirth O'Connell and her brother, Patrick J., Jr. Surviving is her sister, Sr. Margaret Mary O'Connell of Philadelphia, PA.
There will be a memorial Mass on May 1, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. in St. Denis Church, Highway #71 and Union Avenue, Manasquan, NJ. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph's Villa, 110 West Wissahickon, Flourtown, PA 19031.
