Alvin Louis Puterman

AGE: 85 • Long Branch

Alvin Louis Puterman, 85, died peacefully on April 25th at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was born in Braddock, PA and grew up in New York City. He returned to Pennsylvania as a teenager and graduated from Braddock High School in 1946. He then relocated to Long Branch and graduated from Monmouth College. Mr. Puterman was a member of the National Guard for several years. Alvin worked in the garment industry in New York before beginning a career as a small business entrepreneur opening a successful furniture store on Broadway, Long Branch, Puterman's Fine Furniture. Later in his career Alvin worked as a mutual clerk at Monmouth Park Racetrack for many years. He was very active in civic and cultural affairs. Alvin was a charter member and founder of the Long Branch Lodge 167, Knights of Pythias and served as its Chancellor Commander. He was president of the West End Parent Teachers Association and President of the Long Branch Parent-Teachers Association. He served as Vice-President of the Men's Club of Congregation Brothers of Israel. He was a member of the Joseph Finkel Lodge 1449 B'Nai B'rith and its bowling league as well as the YMHA bowling league. Alvin was also a member of Aerie 2313 Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Great Long Branch Chamber of Commerce and the Monmouth Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association. He was a member of the Long Branch Kiwanis Club and served as chairman of the Business and Public Affairs Committee. Alvin was actively engaged in Boy Scouts fundraising campaigns, the Heart Fund, United Cerebral Palsy and other charitable drives. He served the city as a member of the Citizen's Advisory Committee for Public Housing and Urban Renewal and as a member of the Planning Board. Alvin loved music and was never shy about picking up a microphone belting out Sinatra tunes (on key) to the enthusiastic applause of his wife and children. He was an avid sports fan.

Alvin was predeceased by his father, Murray and Mother, Freeda Puterman. He is survived by the love of his life, his beloved wife of 65 years, Zarna Bader Puterman, a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sharon Puterman, Eatontown; a daughter, Jill Levine, Long Branch, a son, Brian Puterman, Pasadena, CA; three grandchildren, Shari Puterman, Robbie Puterman and Maxx Puterman and a great grandchild, Dylan. Alvin is also survived by his sister, Sheila Kopelman, and a brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Grace Puterman, Tampa, FL. He loved his family and lifelong friends and will be missed.
