Catherine Lucille Smack, 84, of Navesink, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, peacefully at home. She was born Nov. 17, 1929 in Bermuda, to the late Caroline and Edward (Bosun) Swainson. As a military wife and homemaker, they lived in Florida in the late 1950's and in Guam in until 1962. In 1963, she moved to Navesink, NJ where she reared five children. Catherine is remembered as an exceptional mother and teacher.
Educated at Central State University in Ohio, and a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she received degrees in teaching and business administration. She became a teacher in the Middletown Township Public School system for Special Needs children in 1968 and eventually took on the responsibility of implementing the special education curriculums at the elementary school level, retiring in 1995. Within the community she was a member and President of the Navesink Hook and Ladder Ladies Auxiliary.
Catherine was featured in an Asbury Park Press newspaper article titled Special Education: 'Out of the Closets and Basements' on Jan. 18, 1981.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, William Gordon Smack II in 1996. Catherine is the loving mother of Constance Elizabeth Roshdy of Bangor, PA, William Gordon Smack III of Red Bank, Donna Marie Bower of Navesink, Cheryl Anne Smack, of Pembroke, Bermuda, and John Augustus Smack, of Navesink. She is the proud grandmother David Smack-Garcia in Nurnberg, Germany and Brittany Maldonado-Bower. Also surviving are her siblings, Edward Swainson of Atlanta, GA, Sybil Robinson of Pembroke, Bermuda, and Leslie Swainson of Somerset, Bermuda.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, with a service at 11 a.m. at the John E.
