Helen L. Newton, beloved wife of Richard, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Community Medical Center, Toms River, at age 88. Helen was born in West Orange, and was a graduate of West Orange High School. She graduated from Drew University in Madison, NJ in 1947 in the first class to include women, with a degree in Economics. In 1948, she married the love of her life, Richard P. Newton. They were married for 66 years, and had four children. During their marriage, Richard's career took them all over the world, including Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, and the Marshall Islands. Upon retirement, they continued to love to travel extensively, and spent their winters in Key Largo, Florida. She was a member of the Holmdel Community Church of Christ.
Helen was a devoted homemaker, raising four children and managing the household. In addition, she volunteered with mentally challenged adults and children, and worked as a volunteer with each of her church families.
Helen Louise Newton, nee Wolfe, daughter of the late Frederick A. and Helen (Douglas) Wolfe.
Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Dick. She was predeceased by her son, Rick Newton. She is survived by her loving children, Elizabeth Newton of Clifton, Nancy Pilla and her husband Mark of Tabernacle, and Bob Newton and his wife Sue of Methuen, Massachusetts. She is survived by her brother, Fred Wolfe and his wife, Lorrie of Vermont, and was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Wolfe Bash. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Kim Newton and her boyfriend, Dan Desjeunes, Tom Newton and his fiancée Laura Patenaude, Lauren Pilla, and Daniel Pilla and his fiancée Jenny Greenbaum.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate her life at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ, 40 Main St., Holmdel, NJ 07733.
