Glenn Samuel Shirey, 97, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away on April 19, 2014 at home. He was born in Moultrie County, Illinois on August 27, 1916, to Ralph S. Shirey and Helen Hendricks. He spent his formative years on the farm in Moultrie County and later in Sullivan, Illinois, before he moved east to New York City. He went into the Army and was stationed in San Francisco during World War II. After the war he moved to Toms River, News Jersey and studied piano tuning under Steinway and Company and made that his life's work. Later in life he taught many others his trade. He was an accomplished pianist, loved gardening, antiquing and his sports cars.
Glenn was predeceased by his three sisters, Gertrude Dixon, Pauline Miller and Carrie Rieck. He was predeceased by two nieces, Betty Hendrick and Paula Hearn. He is survived by one niece, Deanna D. Dubs and her husband, Dick, and two nephews, Glenn F. Miller and his wife Lea and Philip H. Miller and his wife Kim and a number of great nephews and nieces.
A memorial gathering and celebration of Glenn's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. Following there will be a committal service with military honors at Riverside Cemetery in Toms River.
