Bernard Elihu Friedman

AGE: 85 • Sebastian, FL

Bernard Elihu Friedman, 85, died Saturday, May 17, 2014.

Bernie The Attorney (AKA Bernard Friedman) as he liked to be called, was the man to call when you were in trouble. Too bad he didn't take his own advice!

After one year in Lafayette College, he joined the US Navy and served as a stock clerk on the USS Northampton, ECLC-1. He would patiently explain to everyone that this was an experimental ship, the main purpose of which was to provide emergency shelter for the president during the Korean War. Bernie delighted in the fact that he was a part of that well-kept secret!

During that time, Bernie was married to his first wife Renee (deceased) and had two children, Douglas Michael (mow married to Suzanne and living in Wellington, FL) and Scott Martin (now married to Debbie and living in Sebastian, FL).

After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he went on to work in the hospitality field in various positions ranging from food service, Maitre'D, or General Manager in upscale restaurants and resorts. Possibly the highlight of his career was the time he spent at Grossingers in the Catskills, where he served the rich and famous.

It was during these years that he met the love of his life, Leatrice or "Lee" as she was known, and they married in 1974. Their honeymoon in New Orleans must have been quite memorable, as the pictures were endless, and he often spoke of it. Some time later, they moved from NYC to New Jersey, where Bernie began working as a driver for Olympic Limousine Service, "The biggest limousine company in New Jersey," he used to brag.

Sadly, his beloved Lee died in 2011, so he moved to Sebastian, FL to be with his son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Debbie. Since his sole reason for living was gone, he let everyone know that he only wanted DEATH, but God help us if we ever ran out of Coke, orange juice or Honey Buns!

Shortly after his arrival, it became clear that his two best friends were Johnny Walker and Pall Mall. They were inseparable. His main complaint about Florida? "You can't smoke in any of the bars here!" Eventually, he found the No Name bar in Sebastian where he could smoke and drink a few afternoons a week until he wasn't allowed to drive anymore.

In addition to his two sons, he leaves behind two step-sons, Mark & Neil, two grandsons, Shaun Michael Friedman, Port Saint Lucie, FL and Seth Edward Friedman, Gulfport MS and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Friedman, Gulfport, MS. Bernie was born in NYC to Morris and Mary (Goldwater) Friedman in October of 1928.
