Robert W. McGrath, Sr., 101, of Neptune City, passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
Mr. McGrath was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan. After graduating in 1940 from Springfield College (Springfield, Massachusetts), he worked as a YMCA director until his career was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served aboard LST 391 during World War II and participated in the invasions of Africa, Italy and Normandy. After the war he returned to YMCA work and was the director of the Y in Asbury Park until he began a career as a professional fundraiser, from which he retired at the age of 62. He continued to work at an assortment of jobs, until he finally retired at the age of 94 from his position as a guard at Boscov's Department Store. He moved to Neptune City in 1950 and was a communicant and choir member at St. James Episcopal Church, Bradley Beach.
Mr. McGrath was predeceased by his beloved wife, Phyllis (nee Knight) in 1996. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Vera Dale, in 1943. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marty and Paul Taylor, of Wall, and his son, Robert W. McGrath, Jr., of Neptune City. He is also survived by his grandsons and their wives, Justin and Jackie Taylor, of Freehold, and Jordan and Nikki Taylor, of Brooklyn, and his granddaughter, Becky Taylor, also of Brooklyn, as well as his sister, Lorena Jones, of Bay City, Michigan.
Visitation will take place at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Sunday, June 1, 2014, from 4-7 P.M. Interment with military honors will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J. on Monday, June 2 at 2 P.M. A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Bradley Beach at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Bradley Food Pantry, 605 4th Avenue, Bradley Beach, N.J. 07720.
