William Shelbrick

AGE: 84 • Grandy, NC

William Shelbrick, 84, of Grandy, NC., entered into eternal life on July 17, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family and was reunited with the love of his life. He was born in Hazlet, NJ., and lived in Middletown prior to moving to North Carolina with his wife 20 years ago. William worked as a foreman and tree trimmer for Asplundh Tree Service for 45 years. Prior to his career with Asplundh, William served in both the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. He joined the Merchant Marines and served for 19 months until he was old enough to enlist in the Army, where he served Honorably during the Korean War earning 3 bronze stars. He was a member of Keansburg Jaycees for many years. William loved to build things, and he was a tinkerer. He was the original McGyver. For much of his adult life and prior to retiring, he worked on the weekends at Pleasant Valley Farm in Marlboro NJ. He brought that love of the land to his home where he grew an enormous garden and he canned what he grew, including his homemade tomato sauce and an ill-fated attempt at pickles and sauerkraut. William was a very good story teller and loved to talk to everyone he met. We will miss him dearly.

Surviving are his three daughters, Theresa Cohoon, Barbara Rizzo, and Debora Kopy and her husband, Harry; his 5 grandchildren, William, Anthony, Angelina, Courtney, and Alexander; and his many nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosanna, in 2005, his granddaughter, Katrina, and his parents, Stanley and Bessie Shelbrick.
