John J. Donovan

AGE: 87 • Middletown

John J. Donovan, 87, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, surrounded by his family at home in Middletown. He was born in Mountainside to the late Daniel and Julia Donovan. He lived in Bayonne and Newark before moving to Middletown 55 years ago. John proudly served our country during World War II in the US Navy. John was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank, a life member of K of C Council and former member of Fairview First Aid Squad. He worked for the Federal Selective Service in Newark as the Area Office Administrator of New Jersey for 25 years and then Riverview Medical Center Security Department until retiring in 1990.

He is predeceased by his wife, Elsie Carey Donovan; his two daughters, Theresa Daneman and Virginia Gottlieb; his brother, Daniel Donovan; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Andy Piazza, Patsy and Tony Szewko, Joan and Joe O'Donnell, and Helen and Bill Hogan, and his sister-in-law Virginia Donovan. Surviving are his children, Kevin Donovan of Mt. Vernon, Washington, Larry Donovan of Guerneville, California, Charlie Donovan and his wife Kathy of Hazlet, Dorothy and her husband Michael Riordan of Middletown, Marguerite Donovan of Middletown, Cecelia Donovan of Middletown, Maureen and her husband Randy Gregston of Middletown, Michael Daneman of Middletown and Bert Gottlieb of Middletown; his loving grandchildren, Shannon Daneman, Melissa Daneman, Jessica Gottlieb, John Donovan, Stephanie and Eric Bodo, Megan Daneman and Eric Van Schaack, Michael Daneman Jr., Eddie Donovan, Katie Donovan and Matt Lipnick, Emily Gottlieb, Matthew Gregston, Kristen and Rich Rauch, Betsy and Jon Costello, Jim and Amanda Carr; his great-grandchildren, John, Sophia, Logan and Olivia. Also surviving are many loving siblings, Mary and Nick Bulka of Bayonne, Frank and Josephine Donovan of Hamilton, Bill and Bea Donovan of Colorado, Sister Dorothy Donovan of North Arlington, Mike and Joyce Donovan of Matawan, Gertrude Donovan of Interlachen, Florida and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at St. James R.C. Church in Red Bank. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
