Obituary Condolences

Joseph John Daniels, 92, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his daughter's home in Fanwood. He was a native of Bloomfield and graduated from Bloomfield HS where he was an All State football tackle. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame in 1982. On a scholarship he played football for Georgetown University where he was an All American tackle and played in the Orange Bowl in 1941. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but was called to service by the armed forces. While in the armed force he was selected to play 3 games against the NFL. As Captain in the Army Air Force he was stationed in China, and for many years afterwards he supported orphanages in that region. Following the war he returned to his wife and settled in Cedar Grove, where they raised a large and loving family. He had a 37 year career as District Sales Manager for Signode Corporation (now a division of Illinois Tool Works). He was active in St. Catherine of Siena Parish and was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. After retiring he moved to Lavallette in 1981. At St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina in Lavallette he served as Eucharistic Minister and Lector, was a Third Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Seaside Park and was treasurer of Serra Club. Joseph was an educated man who majored in faith, family and friends and minored in football.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marion of 59 years. Surviving are eight children and their spouses: Mary Jo and Janek Skutnik, Joseph Daniels, Peter and Carol Daniels, Christine and Peter Kucma, Alicia and Jeffrey Wheeler, Mark and Irene Daniels, Marion and Edward Price, and Margaret and Gregory Christensen; 15 grandchildren and their spouses: Zachary and Rebecca Daniels, Jonathan and Amy Skutnik, Peter Skutnik, Jason and Lisa Kucma, Ian and Lauren Kucma, Adrienne Kucma, Courtney and Richard Andrews, Timothy Daniels, Christian, Sean and Joseph Wheeler, Matthew and Leigh Daniels, and Sally and Michael Christensen; and 7 great-grandchildren: Gabriel and Kelsey Daniels, Nathanial and Benjaman Skutnik, Haley and Chol Kucma, and Raigan Andrews.
Viewing will be from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, March 9 at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Route 35 North, Lavallette. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 am on Wednesday, March 10, at St. Padre Pio Pietrelcina Church, Route 35 North, Lavallette. Interment will follow in BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provincetown Road, Arneytown. Throughout his life Joe supported numerous charities and organizations. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Seminary, School of Theology, Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Ave., South Orange, NJ, 07079-2646, or to the charity closest to your own heart in his memory.
